Website Scaling for a Feed Aggregator

Website Scaling for a Feed Aggregator

Websites that are based on aggregating RSS feeds have different requirements than traditional website services. Most other websites provide original content for the end-user, whereas feed aggregator websites rely on combining in one place all the information from a number of RSS feeds and website sources.

The Bloglines website is a case in point regarding scaling of feed aggregator websites, as it was the premier website in this field. As Bloglines became more popular for people to easily access a number of their personalized pages with different RSS feeds, Bloglines had to come up with a scalable way to aggregate billions of blog posts in a user friendly way. Unlike other websites which use a database, Bloglines instead used a special file system to easily store the RSS feeds for users.
