The integrated Kinetic Energy (IKE), a new hurricane scale has the ability to predict potential destruction from storm surge as well as wind surge. The newly patented hurricane scale has been released but the National Hurricane Center has not confirmed whether the use or endorsement of this hurricane scale will begin soon. IKE co-creator Mark Powell said that the IKE focuses more on Surge, which is the primary destructive weapon of a hurricane. He stated that the currently used hurricane scale, the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale has been ineffective in accurately predicting the potential destruction. This is because the Saffir-Simpson scale only takes estimated maximum wind speed into account for categorizing hurricanes on a scare from 1-5. The IKE hurricane scale can overcome this inability because it takes into account the surge primarily, as well as the other factors.
